I have been playing with a new series of work. Working title is simply "The Doodles." Exploring color, abstraction, emotion in a variety of materials and mediums. So far nothing has burst into flames. (yay!) I've been using anything i have laying around for this project. Prestreched canvas, salvaged barn boards, salvaged barn window glass, illustration board, postal packaging, wood, MDF, canvas board, and paper. Basically whatever i have laying around in reach.

Combining this series with my goal of one artwork a week has been easy. Though with going back to working a normal daytime schedule (8am-5:30p) I've been fighting with having enough energy to even do a little work on my artwork when i return home in the evenings. So I will admit that I am lagging in my determination to maintain my goal.

I will soon have all the pieces I have photographed so far online on my website soon. I will have to reshoot a couple pieces simply because i never noticed how badly my hands were shaking while taking the pictures from too much caffeine and too little food. So goes life I suppose. But with me banging out so many pieces i seem to have discovered an overflow of work, some fairly large or breakable. Which means very soon I will begin to offer them for sale.

Oh hey. I've got a blog. 2.5 months. that's not too long to leave something setting into nothing right??

Where to begin. At the beginning of May I decided to force myself to finish a art project a week. Any medium. Any style. Just get one thing finished and done a week. Well apparently I have the attention span of a rabbit on cocaine.

I attended the Spring BFA 2011 Exhibition of some very dear friends of mine in SUNY Oswego. Got there to find pretty much the entire group of students i've worked with over my 6 years there in Oz graduating. Honestly i didn't get through one gallery before the 2 hour show closed. So many people to talk to so many happy moments to remember. But it gave me a royal kick in the pants. Well these... "kids" are doing more than i ever did in my time there. So better kick it up a notch.

Back to this Work a Week goal. Honestly i hate lists, i hate making goals. They anger me for some reason. But this one has really gotten on my nerves. Not only am I motivated enough to get something done but I'm embarrassed if i can't finish something in a week. (probably why i haven't told anyone recently. (really need to change the name of my blog...) )

So i finally said F**K IT. I was out of my typical paper i use and had no choice but to start experimenting with other surfaces. I used my trustworthy sharpie. (never failed me yet) got drunk, (another great artist tip to make something happen) and attacked a pre-stretched canvas i've had laying around the house since high school. Something happened. the next morning i found a relatively finished product. But that piece led to another... and another. I had 3 finished works by the time Tuesday hit. (began on a sat night) *below*

Another and another followed. Canvas, MDF Particle board, and a reclaimed barn board. teh same base green till i felt i was done for the moment with that color. Then i started in on the blue shades. At this point i wasn't just playing with the color or the medium but beginning to discover how the medium and color connected with an emotion, even the surface had something to say. The surface dictated shape, the color and then the eyes.

The way i applied the paint made me feel that the texture interacting with the surface dictated emotion. Blue is angry if thrown at the surface.

Now 3 weeks in, almost 10 paintings..(?) in i have no idea where this is going. Let's just hope i don't step on broke glass. or nails... or whatever else i start painting on. Always with my eyes though. Doodle eyes. Simple. Direct. Eyes. So many connotations.

Like i've said before. Catch me if i can, i may have fallen down a rabbit hole deeper than i've ever before. Let's see where this goes.

Fleshing out a Character

A big part of creating for me is creating not only an image but a being, a character. I've got an attachment to some extent on all my doodles and drawings. Most of the time i don't feel it necessary to make this known to my viewers. More feelings and concepts than actual words that can be expressed. I suppose that makes me a bit of an odd duck.

Every person will have a different take on an image, or written passage. We all see a different blue kind of thing. I suppose to an extent I'm still trying to find words or a series that can express this.

But anyway. I have been working in Illustrator more recently. Less messy than paints, quicker color.

Hard to keep busy when I've suck into a sleep cycle that requires 12-15hrs to feel human again. Still working on the job front... had one with a circus; left because I missed my Mushi too much. I realized that once we started moving around i prob wouldn't be able to see her for at least 3 months.

Time to start on my Grad applications, too bad i cannot afford to submit them. Guess I will need to make some calls. So the most recent news is the fact i moved out of my studio of 2.5 years. I will miss it. I do enjoy my 15+hr art binges. If you notice my raptor that held such a honored place in my studio has migrated along with the dog and myself. I am still spontaneously working on art. Though i notice i plan less and just create when not required to show proof of work by professors. I have currently 4 personal projects and one design job. Problem is i can't just work on a series i just kind of create monsters and such on the fly. We will see.

My most exciting piece I'm working on right now is my charcoal door piece. Honestly started due to hatred of the blank space and easy reach of a really nice piece of chalk then it goes from there.

I am contemplating how i would promote myself as an artist, i suppose my next goal is a real genuine website featuring my work. My dA website is fine for now but still lacks something.

So i have finally graduated from SUNY Oswego with my BFA in Fine Arts, concentrate in illustration and printmaking. I have my portfolio online at http://elizhunt.daportfolio.com/ i'll be using that for a while.

I finally got back up to Oswego to work in my studio this weekend. Spent nearly 6hrs today working on a piece that i haven't touched in over a year. The above piece is about 1/3 done after today. Working title is "Conversation with an Earthworm"

This has been a very trying semester, i seem to be perpetually behind. But a few thing i have managed to accomplish. I have about 1/2 of my final portfolio finished and documented. I have FINALLY managed to get the wood i need to start my next big wood block project. Now i just need to let my nose recover and start working.

Art Exhibitions.

So... if you remember way back when i first started this blog i used it to document the epic print project in 2008. Yeah one of the huge 5 panel print. (one of which is displayed below in the new student gallery on campus)

So, Anyway way back in October i sent the whole 5 panel set off to Albany with a group of work from SUNY Oswego for the All SUNY Art exhibition. And... Until last week i heard nothing about it, no one from Oswego new where any of it was. So finally i go up to the head of the department, in person to get everything sorted out.

So about three weeks ago i was told that the exibit had been up since Dec 10th. And that it was being taken down Jan 29th. Well i was told this the week of Jan 29th. Wow. Nice job SUNY network on getting the info passed along to any of the artists. NO ONE knew anything here at Oswego.

Being that Jan 29th a representative from Oswego would be heading out to Albany to pick up any/all work that did not make it into the Best of SUNY Exhibition which is the next step up after the first show, i decided to not go out there but to save gas and wait and see what came back.

Today, i walked into my studio to find a poster on my door. A poster advertising the Best of Exhibition. My prints are one of ten images on that poster.

After receiving congratulations and confirmation that indeed i did get through to the Best of SUNY show, i also found out that i was the only student from Oswego who's work made it in the show.

Yes i'm excited. Hopefully i'll be notified when the reception is so i can actually go this time. I'm psyched. I'm about ready to stuff my car full of excited art student friends and head out to Albany to see what we can find out.

This is my first major art show. Wow. Simply Wow.

Quick update on my art beginnign with a peak into my studio. What you don't see is above me is 15ft ceiling with various industrial pipes and vents running across it. It's a great thinking space.

In the photo below you can get a look at my current project, the superheros. Only a month to finish not only a decent sized paper on trees but to finish at least 6 12x15.5 inch color illustrations to complete my advanced illustration class. I'm going to be spending a lot of time in my studio over the next month.

Below you can see i've also started a new woodblock. Something to keep me distracted when i really should be working on my superhero illustrations. So it goes, I only work best when i'm bouncing between 3-4 projects at the same time. I really am going to need to restock my tea supply.

Superhero Character Design

I have a vague idea of all the super hero characters now. Though my scanner is currently having a fit about scanning things because it doesn't feel like scanning.

I've starting working out the character designs. This is the first time I've actually attempted to draw a character in depth. i really want to get a feel for each of them and be able to draw them at the drop of a hat. But we'll see. Spent three hours today on Gunther.

In the end each character will be fully developed and hopefully along with pages and pages of character doodles so i can get them right before the final pieces.

Finally got around to discussing my major project in my Illustration II class.

Here are some concept sketches. More info to follow. It's basically a collaboration between multiple people, we interacted in a Superhero's RPG. And i wanted to really focus on a theme outside of my box. So here i go.

In three months i shall... have all the character concepts done, at least 6 of the main characters portraits done and 4-5 concept splash pages/title pages.

So down the rabbit hole i go.

Not 100% sure what will happen to my large wood block print piece that is suppose to go to Albany. I dropped it off, and everyone in the office looked at me like i was crazy. So by the beginning of the week i should know if it made it to Albany or not.

At least it's framed now, ready for whatever show it can make it in next. And it WILL be in my BFA show in the spring. I'd like to see the faculty try and stop me!

Time to start checking out more grad schools.

It's only been a week but i've got my concept nearly finalized, with some assistance from my professor. And i'm working on values and even a little color now. B/W is due Thursday. Hopefully i can post that when it's done. Sadly the top 1/5th and bottom 1/5 are cut off in this immage. Oh how i wish i had a bigger scanner.

About as productive as i can be without leaving my house, and dealing with bouts of just feeling sick. Nice thing about Illustrator is that i can sort out colors if i want to do a painting later on. Otherwise Illustrator and I are at a stand off in our epic battle to work together.

For me, this word brings up images of tired old toys, forgotten and banished to await the day their former owners simply throw them out. It seems in today's society few children understand the meaning of these relics. To many of them have had everything handed to them on a silver plate, brand new and shiny. No respect for the toys our elders once passed down, when something is broken they just buy a replacement. Mending is a thing of the past for them.

Finished Book

Finally the end of the semester has arrived. Only one more year to go till i can finally graduate and move on to grad school.

I finished up my semester with this book arts project. More a sculptural representation of my art. I used a sculpty like material to create the covers and the inside sculptures.

I may finish out this book with a narrative that goes along with it. I'm still playing with the idea but i believe it would make the piece stronger.

How busy the semester has been, projects, papers, trips, conferences, work and studying have taken a toll on my productivity the semester. Besides being exhausted, i simply haven't been able to get as much work done as I've been hoping to this semesters. I feel that I've failed to take full advantage of my studio space on campus. I think it's been only three times this semester that I've had a chance to work in the studios outside of normal class hours.

But what i have been doing is wrapping up several projects at once. I believe I've run my final printing of my large woodblock project and will soon have a version framed and ready to start heading out for shows. I'll have pictures of the final thing up as soon as i find time to take them.

Last Sat. i spent 4 hours in the studio making about 25-30 prints. Productive but exhausting.

My book arts class is holding an exhibition "Bones and Bristles" May 1st at CherryWood Studios

in Oswego, NY, 6pm-8pm. It will be an exhibit of our classes projects. Two of my own work will be in it. Including the piece I'm currently working on.

Below are my "practice doodle" pages while working on the most current project. I'm never entirely sure where my projects take me, and this one has been a challenge. It's "Due" on Tuesday. Only 26 more illustrations to go.

My joy is in the process. If I didn't love how i do what i do then why should i do it at all?

Printmaking VII

Well though i lack pictures i think today was pretty successful.

I'd hoped to have everything done by Tuesday, but I'm not going to be quite there.

I took a trip to Syracuse last night to buy more Strathmore 300 Drawing paper in a 10yrds x 42" wide roll. I bought two because i wasn't sure there would be enough.

Spent about an hr in the studio measuring paper and cutting. Then flattening it enough to be able to work with it. Then proceeded to spend about 5.5 hrs in the studio printing. 35 prints later (that's 6.36 prints an hr) I had 15 on nice paper and a little over half of those are usable prints.

but i was only able to do three of each block on nice paper, about halfway though printing today did i realize that i was short my goal of 5 individual prints per block. But i can always continue again tomorrow or perhaps monday afternoon.

I'm not sure about the condition of my large hand prints. It is an epic project and hand printing usually dosent' like me. But this paper does take the ink really well. And if i can figure out how to hand print and where to let such a large print dry in between printings then perhaps i will continue on with my idea. I'm going to attempt to get permission to use the printmaking studio over the winter break, along with all the supplies therein. With some begging i might even get the head of the department to give her ok.

Printmaking VI

Sat. both the power and water were shut off in Tyler, so it made working a little difficult. But i still spent a good 5hrs there even after cleaning up a small chemical spill. I continued carving where i wanted corrections and adjustments. And then got a few prints done (maybe 10 or so)

As I have shown over the past few weeks is my process of creating the images and craving them out. Next is the actual printing process. Starting with the carved block, i make sure i brush off any stray wood chips to keep them from mixing with ink.

Next step is to prepare the ink. If you look in the upper left corner of the image below you can see a black section on the counter. That is the ink rolled out with a large roller (like a rolling pin but rubber) By inking up the roller i can spread the ink evenly across the block that I'm printing.

Next step is to place the block on the printing press and lay a sheet of paper on top. Two pieces of felt are placed on top and the block and paper are run through the press.

The Printing press is fairly large as you can see in the photo, my block is about 30"x18" and i still have about 5 inches on either side if i eventually choose to go larger. The printing press is actually a table top on rollers that get pulled between two large metal rollers that apply the pressure to the block. As you spin the crank the whole thing runs between the rollers and comes out on the other side.

Above you can see a brand new print being pulled off the block.

When the finished print and the original block are compared you can see the reversal of the image. A very important thing to keep in mind when working with a multiple section image like i am.

Printmaking V

Well it's December. As of last post i manage to finish the major carving of my five blocks. I was able to finally see what the prototype of the finished print will look like. I printed the last three blocks Wed. Dec 3rd. About 12 prints in three hours, despite ink and press issues. It took several runs though the press to get the right consistency for the ink to print solidly.

First test of the full print below

Next on the schedule is to correct some lines, broaden a few, clean up some stray marks and get ready to print the final prints.

My plan is to use the press to do the individual blocks as cleanly and boldly as possible. I really want to get the crisp black and white graphic look that the press allows me to print. Which i may not be able to achieve when i hand print the full print.

Once i get done with the individuals (most likely editions of 3-5 of each block) i will get ready to print all the blocks on one full sheet of paper. That i will have to do by hand, and experiment with the drying rate of the ink, if all goes well it should take me about five days to print the five blocks. One a day with enough time in between to let the ink on the preceding prints dry so that i can roll the paper to the next section. I believe that i will have enough paper to do two editions this size. A test and a final finished piece.

As you can see the other problem I'm facing is a camera that doesn't like to take clear photos in a moderately lit hallway. Hopefully i will be able to get better photos this weekend while I'm in the studio.

Little less than two weeks till the semester ends.

Printmaking IV

I apologize for the quality of the images, i didn't have my camera with me and had to use my camera phone. Better quality images coming this weekend.

This is the 4th block, the first 3 are nearly finished the first round of carving and i will test print them soon, possibly this weekend while I'm on campus.

You can see how I'm trying to use the direction of my cuts to create exciting motion on the blocks. My goal is to give this piece a drastic change in mood from the first three.

My carving project continues. Slowly the details emerge. Unfortunately it's going to take longer than i thought because a particular carving tool has gone missing.

I'm really trying to use the texture of my carving strokes to add to the piece.

Work continues on my large scale woodblock print project. Only about four weeks left in the semester if i count thanksgiving, which looks like I'll be taking my carvings home with me. Hopefully being able to hide away in the garage and work.

Here is the best image of what i intend to carve to print. I apologize because they aren't' fluidly linked together but the general idea should be observed.

Each block will connect with the next lining up the panorama.

First i created a template on paper with sharpies so that i could line the blocks up with each other and make any changes to my image. Then i removed the paper, coated the back of it with charcoal and then transferred my image by tracing over my image with a pencil. the charcoal left a ghost image much like the image left by carbon paper. which i then retraced with sharpie to determine my dark and light areas of the image.

Below is the blocks waiting for my carving tools. They also show how the finished piece should fit together.

Surprisingly the first block i drew and became inspired to draw became the first victim of my carving tools. And it might be the only one i really want to recut and use my templates to trace a new image. I'm not quite happy with the marks i began my caving with. And after the first few slices i realized that it might have a better impact if i did it a different way that would allow me to carve more wood out in the future if i didn't' like the first print.

New printmaking project!

So it's taken half a semester to think of my semester long project for my printmaking class. But i finally have it.

I shall create a 7.5ft long print with five 18"x30" MDF boards. Sectioning the block will allow me to better handle the entire piece and i could print each block separately with the press (hopefully) giving me the strong graphic look that i have used in other pieces.

I will then use invisible frame frames to put the pieces back together

er if i end up showing it.

Or so is my plan. But we shall see what happens between now and the middle of December.

First i wrapped all five blocks in butcher paper (just crappy paper to try my template on) Then i drew the actual image i wanted on each block on the paper, next i will decide where i want my darks and lights. After that i transfer the image to the block by rubbing the back of the paper with charcoal and transferring it with a pencil, and redraw it with a sharpie.

To five separate blocks i have to make sure that the lines on each image connect together. So i have to draw them next to each other, but i kinda needed to rearrange the tables in the room to do so. And may have forgot to put them back where i found them when i left the studio today...

Progress at the end of today? nearly all the blocked draw on the paper, few corrections and a chat with my professor if i can get a hold of her then onto transferring the images and starting the carving process. Probably about 4-5 weeks till finals week. At least i have a goal.

The really cool thing is that if you look back at the first image. That sketch in the end will reverse itself and will read from left to right, instead of it's current right to left form. The crazy thing is i drew it exactly as it needs to be drawn on the books so that it will read from left to right, i didn't' consciously choose to do that! just doodle, doodle, doodle... huh... ? wtf?!? sweet.

Since classes started up again i've been behind in getting things done. Even simple sketches.

9.11 Self Portrait

I accidently found that I have pictures of my finished large scale drawing project. I actually "finished" (i might change a few things next time i pull it out.) on May 11. This was a difficult project, mainly to come up with an idea, and it took me days to actually accept the design and put it down on paper.

I've struggled all week trying to work on this one. And it's still not done.

But i'm hoping either tomorrow or sat. i'll finish it. i hope.

Not really sure what caused me to draw this, I suppose I was simply in the right mood while glancing in my sketchbook and felt that one of my little characters needed to be sad. Spent about 2-3hrs working on this, Ink and watercolors.
